Today it was officially announced that Nexstar Media Inc, would acquire Tegna Inc, in a blockbuster move, nexstar is the largest tv station owner in the country with 201 Stations including 7 in Colorado + a local marketing agreement. In Colorado Nexstar owns the following:
- KWGN (The CW)
- KDVR (FOX)
- KFCT (FOX)
- KXRM (FOX)
- KXTU-LD (The CW)
- KREX (CBS)
- KFQX (FOX)*
- KGJT (My Network TV)
* KFQX is Owned by Mission Broadcasting Inc and is operated by Nexstar & run from studios owned by Nexstar.
Tegna is the largest owner of NBC & CBS stations in the country, in Colorado they own 2 stations KUSA (NBC) & KTVD (My Network TV).
What happens here in Denver when this eventually goes through is anyone's guess, they will probably hold on to the top 2 here which would be KUSA & KDVR / KFCT, what would happen with KTVD & KWGN? they would hopefully go to new owners or be shuttered, Mission perhaps as nexstar would probably want to continue selling ads on these stations or hopefully a 3rd party (Hearst, Gray, ect). Either way this is bad news for staffers at 9NEWS & Channel 20 as they are most likely to be laid off as this merger progresses.
The other question, what happens to the KUSA / KTVD Studios here in Denver, do they get sold off and everything is combined at the KDVR/KWGN "News & Technology Center"??
